LAST GENERATION
Today, two supporters of Last Generation Canada spray painted the Montreal Tesla dealership with pink paint. The group is demanding that Canada stand up to Tesla’s billionaire CEO, Elon Musk, who is destroying democracies and spreading climate denial. Last Generation Canada is also calling on the Canadian government to create a Climate Disaster Protection Agency to help Canadians whose homes, communities, lives and livelihoods have been destroyed by extreme weather caused by fossil fuels. The group wants the government to pay for the agency by levying punitive taxes against the ultra-rich, who are overwhelmingly responsible for the climate crisis.
Starting at around 10am ET, two supporters of Last Generation Canada covered the front of the Montreal Tesla dealership with washable pink paint. The action joins a growing global movement against Elon Musk that targets Tesla dealerships. As of 10:23 am ET, the two supporters were currently still on site and police were arriving.
When asked what compelled them to take action, Marcel Paré, 21 years old, said:
“I took action today because I’m tired of seeing profit being put before life. The billionaires and the ultra-rich are destroying our future for their own gain. While hundreds of thousands of people are being displaced, and people our age are dying protecting us, our government prioritizes helping these mega-corporations, instead of investing in protecting their own population. This is why we’re asking for a Climate Disaster Protection Agency, funded by these billionaires who put us in this situation in the first place, to protect ordinary people who do not have the funds to hire private firefighters, or build flood-resistant houses for them and their families.”
Valérie Lachapelle, age 21, also took action. She said:
“We are not willing to die for these big corporations. We will not let our fate be decided by the ultra-rich. We have tried the “right” way of doing things. We’ve tried the marches, we’ve tried the petitions, but nothing has actually been done to help us in the face of this climate crisis. Now, we have to come out here and disrupt business as usual if we want to make our voices heard.”
The action comes as the FBI criminalizes major climate groups in the US, President Donald Trump, a climate denier, escalates the expansion of fossil fuels and targets climate scientists, and the World Meteorological Organisation notes Earth has just experienced its warmest decade ever. Here in Canada, the Alberta wildfire season has already started, drought conditions have worsened and Canadians are gearing up for what will be another deadly summer with extreme wildfires, heatwaves and floods.
It’s clear – billionaires and fossil fuel companies are waging war on humanity. The climate crisis is decimating people’s lives across the world and in Canada. Governments and fossil fuel companies have known about the devastating and deadly consequences of burning fossil fuels for decades. Despite this, Canada has continued to bankroll the industry. Canadians remain unprotected in the face of climate disaster and threats posed by Donald Trump and Elon Musk. The social contract is broken – it’s time for Canadians to disrupt business as usual to ensure our protection and make the rich pay for what they’ve done.
